Intake Appointment

You have been referred to the Endodontic Clinic for a specialist assessment of a tooth that may have a problem affecting the nerve or the tissues around the root.

Why have I been referred?

Common reasons include:

• Ongoing or severe tooth pain

• Sensitivity to hot or cold that lasts

• A darkened or discolored tooth

• Swelling, infection, or a dental abscess

• A tooth that has had previous root canal treatment

• Trauma (injury) to a tooth

What will happen at my appointment?

The endodontist will:

• Ask about your symptoms and dental history

• Examine the tooth and surrounding tissues

• Perform simple tests (such as cold or bite tests)

• Take dental X-rays or a 3D scan if needed

These steps help identify whether the tooth’s nerve is healthy, inflamed, infected, or no longer alive.

What is the outcome of the diagnosis?

After the assessment, you will be informed whether the tooth:

• Needs root canal treatment

• Requires retreatment

• Can be monitored

• Should be restored or extracted

• Needs referral back to your dentist or another specialist

Will treatment be done the same day?

In some cases, treatment may start at the same visit. In others, the appointment may be for diagnosis only, followed by a treatment plan.

Important to know

• Diagnostic tests are usually quick and minimally uncomfortable

• Accurate diagnosis is essential to save the tooth and prevent future problems

If you have any concerns or pain before your appointment, please contact your dentist or the clinic.
